10 Things To Check Before You Buy

Check #1: Cost Per Meal, Not Per Kilo
Stop Comparing Per Kilo. Compare What Dinner Actually Costs.
Some beef is injected with saltwater to add weight, and loses that water as shrinkage in the pan. MLS grass-fed beef has no added moisture, so your real cost per meal is often lower than the sticker price suggests.

The Checklist
10 Things To Check Before You Buy
Run through these 10 before your next order — most take 10 seconds to check on the label.
- 1
Cost per meal, not just cost per kilo
A lower price-per-kg can still cost more per serving once you account for water weight and trim loss.
- 2
Whether water or saline has been added
Check the ingredients list for "added water" — it affects both price and how much the meat shrinks when cooked.
- 3
Country and farm of origin
Usually printed in smaller text than the headline claim — worth a quick check if origin matters to you.
- 4
How long ago it was packed
"Fresh" can legally apply for weeks after vacuum-packing, as long as it's kept chilled.
- 5
Whether the cut is hand-prepared or pre-packed
Hand-cut to order tends to have more consistent trim and thickness than shelf-packed trays.
- 6
Grass-fed vs. grain-fed — know what you're actually buying
Both are legitimate products with different flavour and fat profiles; neither is automatically the "better" one — pick based on what you're cooking.
- 7
Certification, not just the word "premium"
Look for a named farm, region, or Halal certification body rather than marketing language alone.
- 8
How it's kept cold between the shelf and your fridge
Cold-chain delivery skips the ambient-temperature gaps that happen during in-store restocking.
- 9
Whether delivery time is guaranteed
A stated delivery window is a good sign the supplier controls their own cold chain end-to-end.
- 10
Whether you can actually ask questions and get answers
A transparent butcher should be able to tell you origin, feed type, and pack date on request.

The Anchor Philosophy
"Good Beef Shouldn't Cost You Twice."
I was paying supermarket prices for beef that shrank to nothing in the pan. Once I ran the actual cost-per-meal math, MLS was cheaper — and the quality wasn't even close.
