What Dubai supermarkets don't tell you.
10 things about supermarket "grass-fed" beef that rarely make it onto the label — and how MLS does it differently.

Thing #1: The Price Trick
The Advertised Price Isn't The Real Price.
Some supermarket beef is injected with saltwater to add weight, and loses that water as shrinkage in the pan. MLS grass-fed beef has no added moisture, so what you pay for is what ends up on the plate.

10 Things Dubai Supermarkets Don't Tell You
None of this means supermarket beef is bad — grain-fed and grass-fed are just different products. Here's what to actually check before you buy.
- 1
"Grass-fed" and "grain-fed" are both legitimate — they're not a quality scale
Grass-fed cattle graze on pasture their whole lives; grain-fed cattle are typically finished on a grain diet for extra marbling. Neither is automatically better — they're different products with different flavour and fat profiles.
- 2
Some packs are injected with water or saline to add weight
This is a real, disclosed practice in parts of the industry — check the ingredients label for "added water" or a % retained water statement, since it affects both price-per-kg and how much the meat shrinks when cooked.
- 3
Country of origin isn't always front-of-pack
It's usually on the label in small print, not the headline — worth checking if origin matters to you.
- 4
"Fresh" doesn't always mean recently cut
Vacuum-packed beef can legally be labeled fresh for weeks after packing, as long as it's kept chilled and unfrozen.
- 5
Price per kilo isn't the same as cost per meal
A cheaper price per kg with more water weight or trim loss can end up costing more per actual edible serving.
- 6
Grass-fed beef is naturally leaner
Less intramuscular fat means it can dry out if overcooked — it generally cooks best a little faster and to a lower internal temperature than well-marbled grain-fed cuts.
- 7
Not all "pasture-raised" claims are certified
Look for a named farm, region, or certifying body rather than the phrase alone.
- 8
Shelf beef sits at ambient temperature during restocking
Even refrigerated aisles have brief warm-up windows during restocking — cold-chain delivery avoids that gap entirely.
- 9
Butchery cuts can vary pack to pack
Pre-packed trays aren't always cut to a consistent thickness or trim — worth checking if you're cooking to a specific method.
- 10
You can ask your butcher these questions directly
Origin, feed type, and added water are all fair questions to ask — a transparent supplier should be able to answer all three.

The Anchor Philosophy
"Once You See The List, You Can't Unsee It."
I used to think all grass-fed labels meant the same thing. After reading this, I checked my usual supermarket pack — no origin, no traceability. Switched to MLS the same week.
